On 22 Apr 1944, on a mission in B-24 #42-52445, the aircraft was attacked from the rear by ME-410 intruder that had entered the landing pattern of returning ships. Crashed near Barsham, Suffolk. 7 crew killed. 3 gunners bailed out safely.

2Lt. Mason was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
