B-17F #41-24515 took off, with a crew of 10, on a bombing mission over Wilhelmshaven, Germany. They were hit by ground anti-aircraft fire and also by German fighter planes causing them to crash into the North Sea.

Rollin was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with "1" Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart with "1" Oak Leaf Cluster.
