John was declared "Missing In Action" during the war and was awarded a Purple Heart.

Cpt John S. Doherty enlisted in New York City, New York 6 March 1943.
Prior to Medical school, Captain John S. Doherty completed his undergraduate studies at Conisius College in the Class of 1937. He studied at Buffalo University Medical School. He got military medical training at Halloran Military Hospital, New York. He left for England on 23 May 1943. There he got airborne training and earned 'jump wings'.
In 1943 and 1944 he was medical officer for the 507 PIR and 509 PIR. In combat in Italy and France. He was transferred as "Battalion Surgeon" to 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division, shortly before Operation Market Garden.
He left for Holland on 18 September 1944 in a Waco glider, together with 'medic' Raymond Lane and a jeep with medical supplies.
The glider was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crash landed near the village of Zyfflich (5 km east of Groesbeek). Since then John Doherty and Raymond Lane are MIA.
He was officially decleared dead on 19 September 1945, one year and one day after the incident.
In 2008 his wife heard what had happened with her husband. She lived 65 years in uncertainty about his fate.
