Paul served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F #42-30279 " Black Jacker ", 549th Bomber Squadron, 385th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Washington County, Maryland prior to the war.

B-17F #42-30279 took off, with a crew of 10, from Station #155 in England on a bombing mission over Hanover, Germany. They were attacked and shot down by German fighter aircraft and crashed into the North Sea near Wangerooge, Holland during the war.

" 7 " crew members lost their lives and " 3 " crew members became POW's of the German Army.

Paul was "Killed In Action" in this crash during the war.

His remains were found on August 15, 1943.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
