The citation of the Distinguished Service Cross stated: The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Dale J. Peterson Private First Class, US Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 April 1945, in Germany.

Private First Class Peterson's platoon was forced to take shelter in a large factory by devastating enemy fire from dug in positions 100 yards distant, exposing the platoon to a sudden surprise charge by the strong hostile force ... At great personal risk, Private First Class Peterson voluntarily moved across 50 yards of terrain swept by direct fire from a 20-mm ... gun, rifles, and machine guns.

From his hazardous position, he placed deadly and accurate machine gun fire upon the enemy, enabling members of his platoon to resume the attack ... As the platoon charged forward, Private First Class Peterson sprayed fleeing enemy soldiers, killing fifteen, wounding seven, and forcing three to surrender ... As he attempted to rejoin his comrades in the attack, he was hit by sniper fire and instantly killed ... Private First Class Peterson's bold and courageous actions, at the cost of his life, exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 30th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Private First-Class Dale Jensen Peterson, born 8 Apr 1926, was the oldest of seven children of Carl G and Ruby Johanna (Jensen) Peterson of Jerome County, Idaho. Jerome is in south central Idaho 124 miles west of Pocatello.
In the 1930 census 3-year-old Dale is living with his parents and brother Lavar 2, in Providence, Cache County, Utah. Providence is in northern Utah 78 miles due north of Salt Lake City. His father is a farm laborer.
In the 1940 census 13-year-old Dale is living with his parents and siblings Lavar 12, Don 8, twins Ardean and Arlean 6, Louise 3, and Reva Mae 1, in Logan, Cache County, Utah. Logan is 3 mi NNW of Providence. His father is still a farm laborer.
On his 1944 draft registration Dale is living with his parents in Jerome, Idaho. He is employed by his father on the family ranch.
Dale enlisted 26 Aug 1944 at Fort Douglas, Utah. He'd had two years of high school and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under semiskilled chauffeurs and drives, bus, taxi, truck, and tractor. He was assigned to the 119th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division.
The NARA WWII casualty listings for Idaho show Peterson, Dale J, Pfc from Jerome County as killed in action 6 Apr 1945. Dale's US Utah Military Record says he was killed near Hamelin, Germany. Hamelin is on the Weser River 29 miles southwest of Hanover [Note: Hamelin is the town of the legend of the Pied Piper who was hired to remove the rat population.
