Cliffe died in the horrific World War II campaign known as the "Battle of Hurtgen Forest", the longest battle on German ground in that war.

Searches have been made and still continue to be made, in the area where he was killed, trying to locate the remains of Cliffe.

Cliffe's name on the wall has been adopted by Bart van der Sterren. Bart makes regular visits to Margraten and on special holidays takes an arrangement of flowers to place on the walk below Cliff's name to honor him.
