First Sergeant Thomas Alton Adcock served in the 376th Field Artillery Battalion (B Battery), 82nd Airborne Division. He was killed in Action on a exercise for Operation Husky the planes were shot down by friendly fire over the beaches near Gela, Italy, on July 11, 1943, and he is honored with the Purple Heart.

1SGT Adcock from Arizona, was aboard a C-47, along with his stick of para-troopers. The C-47 was part of 144 aircraft, which aimed at strengthening the 504th, 505th RCT and 3rd Bn [already on Sicily were dropped] was en route to Sicily on 11 July 1943, the invasion fleet off the coast of Gela-Scoglitti and was attacked by German and Italian bombers and fighters. During the final assault, the C-47s in sight. The first aircraft flew unhindered by, but when an unknown gunman opened fire. in total, there are 23 transport aircraft by "friendly fire" down. There was panic and a lot of paratroopers were in the wrong place and dropped too low. Sgt Adcock apparently belonged to the last. Together with his stick, he was found dead in an orchard on ONE 1 1/2 miles from Scoglitti.
