He enlisted in the Army from Chicago sometime prior to WWII, 1939 or 1940. He enlisted under his deceased brother's name and date of birth(1920). He was too young to enlist at the time. He enlisted as Henry Fred Conley. His true name and DOB was Fred Duane Conley(1922). In 1942, he was assigned to the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.
On July 10, 1943, his regiment was deployed from Tunisia to engage in the invasion of Sicily. On that date, 23 of 144 USAAF С-47s were lost to friendly fire by land and naval forces. He was declared MIA. One year and one day later he was declared KIA.

He is listed on the Tablets of the Missing at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Nettuno, Italy.
