On the 20th of July 1942, having taken off from RAF Debden in North Essex, England, Spitfire AD 356 was flying in formation with other aircraft from the squadron carrying out a Rhubarb (A small-scale freelance fighter sortie against ground targets of opportunity) along the French coast at 50-100 feet when a large transport was spotted on the coast road.
The formation dived to attack the convoy, and on the conclusion of the attack, Spitfire 356 and Sergeant Allan were seen to crash in a cornfield.
