Neil Alan Rickard

Neil Alan Rickard of Olympia, Washington, died Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at home surrounded by family and friends after a 16 month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 60 years old. Neil was born in Bakersfield, California to Tex and Louise Rickard. He graduated from West High School and went on to earn a BS from San Diego State and a MS from The University of Washington in Marine Biology.

He was employed for 30 years in various branches of The Washington State Government and with The Washington Department of Transportation as a Marine Biologist. However, the work he enjoyed most was his work on behalf of razor clam research for The Department of fisheries for The State of Washington. He was an avid athlete and outdoor sports enthusiast enjoying everything from his participation of basketball, track, and golf in high school, to snow skiing all over the world, hiking the Yosemite Valley and kayaking with his paddle buddies.

He shared his love of the outdoors with friends and family alike and offered support and inspiration to those of his friends less gifted in these pursuits than he. All who knew him would agree that he was a unique man, a joyful friend, and loving companion as well as a devoted father. He will be greatly missed by all of those whose lived he touched.

Neil is survived by his son, Scot Rickard; brother, Lynn Rickard and wife Bernie; fiancee, Denise Fraser and her daughters' Camille and Margeaux; dear friends, Bob and Leslie LeGoff, Greg and Dana Pratt and countless other dear friends too numerous to mention.

Services will be held on Saturday January 30, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Mills and Mills Funeral Home located at 5725 Littlerock Rd.S.W.in Tumwater, Washington. Visitation will be Friday, January 29th 2010 from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday prior to the service. In celebraton of Neils' life the family would love for guests to dress in their favorite Hawaiian attire if possible. The family prefers donations be sent to The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research 1111 Stewart Ave. Bethpage, NY 11714, or The World Turtle Trust The Honu Project, P.O.Box 297 Kailua, HI 96734 in memory of Neil Rickard.
