Pvt. Rhame joined the US Army on March 10th, 1941 at the age of 25 some 9 months before the attack on Pearl Harbor in Houston, Texas. After training he was assigned to the 67th Armored Regiment of the 2nd Armored Division and was part of the invasion forces at Normandy. The division landed in Normandy on June 9th, 1944 under the command of then Major General Edward H. Brooks. The division operated in the Cotentin Peninsula and later formed the right flank of the Operation Cobra assault which began on July 25th, 1944. PFC Arlen R. Rhame was killed in action three days later AE 28ys.
The August 14th, 1944 edition of the Timpson Weekly Times stated the following "Pfc. Arlen R. Rhame Reported Killed in Action in France. Private First Class Arlen R. Rhame was killed in action in France on 28 July, according to a message received by Daniel R. Rhame, grandfather of the young man, residing in the Wedgeworth community. Pfc. Rhame was a native of this county. Pfc. Rhame had been in the service about three years, and went overseas some 20 months ago. Relatives residing in this area include: grandfather – Daniel R. Rhame, Timpson; grandmother – Mrs. D. C. Harrison, Kilgore; uncles – F. L. Rhame, Timpson; O. T. Rhame, Center; aunts – Mrs. R. D. Hanson, Kilgore; Mrs. G. L. Rhame, Timpson. "
