First Lieutenant, William I. Audette enlisted at Windsor, Vermont, in the Army Air Corps on February 24, 1943. He served with the 848th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group, Heavy. The 490th Bomb Group was a unit of the Third Bombardment Division, the division that was cited by the President for its historic England-Africa shuttle bombing attacks on Messerschmitt aircraft plants at Regensburg, Germany.

He was the son of Oliver Joseph Audette and Dorothy (Davis) Audette.

Audette was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart.

Reported in his hometown newspaper, the Vermont Journal, April 12, 1945 was the following news.

"Friends of Lieut. William I. Audette were saddened to hear that he has been reported missing in action after a raid over Germany on March 21. He was serving as pilot with a B-17 Flying Fortress.

Two weeks previous to this report, Lt. Audette had failed to report back from a mission when he was forced to make an emergency landing in France. However, he later wired his whereabouts to his base. For that mission he received the Air Medal for meritorious achievement.

His wife is the former Virginia M. Sherwin, daughter of Alfred Sherwin and Aurora (Labrie) Sherwin of Windsor. Lt. Audette's parents are Oliver J. and Dorothy (Davis) Audette of Windsor."

He graduated from the Windsor High School with the class of 1939 and was employed at the Cone Automatic Machine Co."
