Manny died near the end World War II in the battle to retake Italy. He left to mourn him his wife Pauline, his 5 year old son, Manny, III., and his 7 year old daughter Gloria.

"PFC Manuel "Manny" Gutierrez Abasta Jr., born 14 Nov 1916, was the son of Manuel and Rosaria Abasta of Douglas, Cochise County, Arizona. Douglas is in far southeastern Arizona on the Mexico border 118 miles southeast of Tucson. He left a wife, Pauline, and two children in Lowell, 24 miles west of Douglas.

In the 1940 census 25 year-old Manny is living with his wife Paula, 2 year-old daughter Gloria and 2 month-old son Manual, III, on F Avenue in Douglas. His occupation is listed as truck driver.

Manny enlisted 15 May 1943 in Phoenix and was assigned to the 87 Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division. PFC Abasta was killed in action on the second day of the spring offensive to break out into the Po Valley from the Apennine Mountains in north central Italy. See 10th Mtn Div 14 Apr near Castel d'Aiano."
