Major Riichard W. Betzer was killed in action in Italy on April 24, according to a war department telegram to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ward C. Betzer, 1935 Garfield.

Major Betzer had been overseas three years, leaving here on May 10, 1942, for duty in North Ireland. After further training in Ireland, he landed in Oran, Africa, about Dec. 22, 1942 and went thru all the African campaigns.

Late in 1943 he landed in Italy where he participated in the Cassino engagement and later at the Anzio beachhead campaign. He crossed the Salerno river and went north to the campaign around Florence.

Major Betzer was at the Casserine pass in Africa when the Germans drove west out of Tunisia, being with the First Armored division as communications officer.

After going to Italy he was liaison officer with the division and later on, after his promotion to captain, was intelligence officer. Recently promoted to major, he was in charge of plans and operations for the Eleventh armored infantry battalion, First armored division.

Major Betzer went into service with the reserve officers in November, 1940. He received his commission as second lieutenant upon his graduation from the University of Nebraska in January, 1937. At the time of activation, he was holding a commission as first lieutenant, going into active service from Fort Sill, Okl., to Fort Knox, Ky.

His wife, the former Marjorie Wiederspan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Wiederspan, and their daughter, Judith Ann, who will be 5 in June, are living with her parents in Denver.

Leaders in young people's work at the Tabernacle Christian church here, they were married at the church in July, 1937.

Major Betzer attended the Lincoln schools and was graduated from the university as an electrical engineer. Immediately upon graduation he went with Westinghouse at Pittsburgh, Pa., and later to Phillips Petroleum company at Bartlesville, Okl.

He was an Eagle Scout in his father's troop No. 16, and later became assistant scoutmaster of the troop and was assistant scoutmaster in Bartlesville.

Major Betzer is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Burton Smith, Ann Arbor, Mich., whose husband is a lieutenant in the infantry in Germany, and Mrs. David Ogden, Bellevue, whose husband is employed at the Martin Bomber company in Omaha.
