Stanley Richard Aspland was born in Ely on 13th April 1891,(Ely Q2-1891 3B:586), son of Richard and Fanny ASPLAND (née WATSON).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at West End, Ely St Mary, with his father Richard ASPLAND [44] market gardener; his mother Frances (Fanny) [38]; sisters Ethel Maud [18] and Hilda [3]; brother Selwyn [13] (shoe shop errand boy). They were all born in Ely.

Admitted in 1895 to Ely Market Street Infants School and later attended Ely Boys School. He became assistant at the Gas Works to the General Manager and Secretary

1911 census... Aged 19, gas clerk, he was at West End, Ely, with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Royston); sisters Hilda and Doris [7] born Ely. One of Frances' 7 children had died.

On 20th July 1916 at Baptist Chapel, Clay Street, Soham (Newmarket Q3-1916 3B:1129) he married Eva Carrie FISK, their address was "Hardcroft", Fordham Road, Soham.

In 1919 his widow was at "Hardcroft", Soham, his parent and sisters Ethel and Irene (Doris Iren) were at West End, Soham, sister Elsie [1884] was Mrs Montague, at St. Pauls Crescent, Camden Square NW, and brother Selwyn (Percy Selwyn) was serving in the Royal Navy.

Enlisted originally as Private 3/21165, 3rd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. In Ely, on 6th December 1916, he gave his address as Hills Lane, Ely, age as 25 years 8 months, occupation-clerk. Height 5 feet 8.25 inches (173.3 cm), chest 36" to 39" (91.4 to 99.1 cm), weight 136 lbs (61.7 kg), which had changed by the time of his commissioning to 5' 9.75" (177.1 cm), and 130 lbs (59 kg). He was posted to the Reserves on 7th December 1915 and mobilised on 19th May 1916 and posted to the 3rd East Surreys on 11th May 1916.
From 5 Company, 3rd East Surreys at Grand Shaft Barracks, Dover, on 25th November 1917 at Bisley, he was admitted to the 7th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps Officer Cadets.

16th January 1918 he arrived in France and joined Base Depot before being posted to join 183 Coy., on 22nd January. On 30th June he was admitted to hospital, ending up on 2nd July in 30 General Hospital, rejoining Base depot on 9th July and his own unit (61st Btn) on the 16th July. The forms do not indicate whether this was due to illness or wounding.
He was on leave in UK from 8th to 22nd August 1918m, returned to his unit on 23rd August and was killed in action on 3rd October. He was buried by the 200th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps, who relieved the 61st that night. His widow did receive his "Officers Record Book" which was on his person, but sought in vain for other personal belongings, which had much sentimental value. although of little intrinsic value.

The Battalion war diary has :-
La GORGUE..3/10/18.."A" and "B" companies advanced in close support of the infantry following up the enemy retirement. "C" and "D" companies were relieved in the Reserve area by two companies of the 200th M.G.Battalion and moved with Battalion Headquarters to the FONTES-MAZINGHEM area.
During the night "A" and "B" companies were relieved by two companies of 200th M.G.C. in the line as per Operation Order ).49 and March Table attached..
Casualties Capt RICHARDS P. MC (killed) 2/Lt ASPLAND S.R. (killed) 1 O.R. killed, 6 O.R. wounded. Reinforcements:- 2/Lt DAVIES W.D.M., Lieut. GRAY G.S. 10 O.R.s

The war was at a far more mobile stage and Stanley was found and buried near the centre of La GORGUE. As was explained to his family in 1920, in agreement with the French and Belgian governments, all the scattered individual burials, cemeteries with less than 40 graves or those in unsuitable places were subject to exhumation and re-interment in other CWGC cemeteries, hence Stanley now rests at Lavantie.
