Joseph Lindemann was born in Manhattan and graduated from the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, now part of Long Island University. He established the Nestle-LeMur Company, a cosmetics manufacturer, in 1927, and, in 1958, after a merger, became president of Smith, Miller & Patch Pharmaceuticals Inc. Nestle-LeMur was sold in 1983, and Smith, Miller changed hands in 1971. He established and financed research laboratories at the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He gave similar aid to the Kyung Hee and Chung Ang Universities in South Korea.

He is survived y his wife, Lilyan Spitzer Lindemann; two daughters, Dr. Barbara Schlei of Bel Air, Calif., and Dr. Carol Abend of Manhattan; a son, George, of Manhattan; a sister, Dr. Lillian Schwartz of Manhattan, and seven grandchildren.
