Son of Joseph and Rhoda (Ferguson) Thogmartin. He married about 1847 to Mary Petree in Mercer County, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Campbell) Petree. They were parents of seven known children: Joseph, Margaret Elizabeth, Sarah Catherine, Marcellus A., Jacob, Levina, and Rose Ann.

After Mary died, he married Elizabeth (Hammons) Campbell, widow of Marion Ora Campbell. She also preceded him in death.

Robert served during the Civil War for the Union. He was known as "Sr." to distinguish him from his brother John's son Robert and John's son Robert was known as "Jr."
