From Paragould Daily Press, Aug. 14, 1966:

Larry Hall Barnhill, 18, Village Community, drowned about 1 p.m. yesterday while attempting to save the life of Bobby Blue, 14 Blytheville, in Spring River in Hardy.

According to Larry's sister, Mrs. Gaylon Stringer, 123 Herren, her brother accompanied his girl friend, Phyllis Nicholson, Marmaduke, and her family to Hardy Saturday night for a weekend outing.

Following the noon meal Sunday, the group walked along the river bank and as they neared a waterfall, they heard Blue cryout for help.

Barnhill jumped in the river, fully clothed to save the boy but both drowned in the swift current. Their bodies were recovered in 15 feet of water.

Mrs. Stringer said Larry was a good swimmer and theorized he either suffered stomach cramps or was pulled under by the Blue youngster.

According to a reporter for the Blytheville Courier, Blue was walking across the rocks near the waterfall when he fell in the water. Friends say Blue was a "strong swimmer". He would have been a ninth grader this year.

Barnhill graduated from Tech High School last May and was employed at Kelley's Supermarket as a clerk in the meat and grocery departments.

Survivors are: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow F. Barnhill, RFD 1; a brother, Fred, Poplar Bluff; a sister, Mrs. Gaylon Stringer, Paragould; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. williams, Tipperary; and a niece, Jeanne Ann Barnhill, Poplar Bluff.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Brown's Chapel Baptist Church; Rev. Alfred Psalmonds officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery by the Heath Funeral Home.
