Gilbert, as he was known to family members, passed away from influenza on his way to France during World War I just a month before the Armistice was signed. He was survived by his wife, Rebecca Laura Gibbons Thomas Edge, and daughters, Mrs. Barbara E. Burdick and Mrs. Dorothy E. Hagerstrand who was just two months old when the family received word of his passing.

He loved sports and working and driving cars. He also assisted his father, Jacob V. Edge, in his saw mill in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.
