Lumsden came to NCSU in 1894 for a degree in (UNKNOWN). He volunteered for the NC Infantry during the Spanish American war and was sent to Cuba as part of the occupation forces. While employed in Birmingham, AL he enlisted and went to France in December of 1917. He was an observer/gunner and was shot in a dogfight while defending another plane behind enemy lines. His pilot was captured but after the war he reported on the gallantry and bravery of Lumsden in defending the other plane, performing the observation mission, which was manned by Lt. John Miller and Lt. Thompson.

He is buried in the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery in Thiaucort, France.


Lumsden is one of the thirty four men honored by the NCSU Memorial BellTower.
