Private First-Class Walter Scott Macaulay, Jr. born 8 Aug 1920, was the son of Walter S and Mary W Macaulay of Pawtucket, Road Island. Pawtucket is on the northeast side of Providence.
In the 1930 census 9-year-old Walter is living with his parents and siblings Evelyn 13, Jean 11, and David 6, at 127 Pullen Avenue in Pawtucket. His father is moulder in a foundry.
Walter's sister Evelyn died tragically 25 Oct 1932 at age 15.
In the 1935 Rhode Island state census 14-year-old Walter is a sophomore at Pawtucket Senior High School living at 232 Power Road in Pawtucket.
In the 1940 census 19-year-old Walter is living with his parents and siblings Jean 21 and David 16, at 232 Power Road in Pawtucket. Walter is a tabulating clerk in a machine shop. His father is still working in the foundry.
On his Oct 1940 draft registration Walter is living at home at 232 Power Road in Pawtucket. He is working at Brown & Sharpe Manufacturing Company in Providence.
Walter married Violet E Irwin, likely in 1942.
Walter enlisted 22 Aug 1942 in Providence. He'd had four years of high school and was single without dependents. His civil occupation was listed under general industry clerks. He was 5'7" and weighed 139 lbs. He elected to join the paratroops and was assigned to the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.
In the 1943 Pawtucket city directory Walter, already in the army, and Violet are listed at 31 Hayward Street.
On D-Day the 506th dropped in the area of Hiesville, St Marie du Mont, and Vierville and St Come du Mont just east of the Douve River and north of Carentan.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for Rhode Island show Macaulay, Walter S Pfc from Providence County as killed in action 8 Jun 1944 so we can assume he was killed in the area just north of Carentan.
In the 1950 Pawtucket city directory Violet is still listed as Mrs. Violet Macaulay (widows are listed as Mrs. but with their first name instead of their husband's first name). Violet remarried John McCaw sometime after 1950. They had two children. She passed away in Gainesville, FL in 2012
