Richard served as a Staff Sergeant & Waist Gunner on B-17G #43-38184, 849th Bomber Squadron, 490th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Chautauqua County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on December 15, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a payroll clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Richard was "Killed In Action" in a mid-air collision with B-17G #43-37941 over France during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
