SSgt George Washington Acreman was the son of Henry Eldridge and Fannie Adell (Payne) Acreman from Georgiana, Butler County in south central Alabama 118 miles northeast of Mobile.
In the 1930 census 7 year old George is living with his parents, 8 siblings, his paternal grandfather and 1 cousin on Pine Flats road in rural Georgiana. His father is a general farmer.

SSgt Acreman enlisted at Fort McClellan, Alabama on 22 Nov 1942 and was in I Company, 3rd Battalion of the 397th Infantry Regiment. The 100th Infantry Division began the drive on the heavily fortified town of Bitche, France on December 3, 1944. After clearing Meisenthal and surrounding Mouterhouse by December 6, began its assault on Lemberg, on December 7, 1944. Wingen and Lemberg were occupied in fierce fighting ending on December 10. Per Marshallfoundation.org/World War II History, "I" Company arrived at Mouterhouse on December 8th, the day before SSgt Acreman was killed in action. SSgt Acreman was buried at the temporary US Military Cemetery at Hochfelden, France 17 miles northwest of Strasbourg.

"After pausing in Mouterhouse, the Company moved about six kilometres north, where it dug in on a hill above Bitche. Principal feature here was repeated mortar fire from Bitche direction. Here Acrement (Sgt. from Alabama) received a lethal head wound; his blood filled a space six feet across in the worn-down floor of the old Mouterhouse post office as he eased from unconsciousness into death."
