Thompson served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17F #42-30727, 367th Bomber Squadron, 306th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Somerset County, Maryland & was a member of the Maryland National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on February 3, 1941, prior to the war, from Crisfield, Maryland. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-30727, while on a bombing mission to Germany, was hit by German flak which knocked out two engines and German fighter planes riddled the tail which caused them to crash in Hoehefeld, 15 miles West of Wurzburg, Germany during the war.

Thompson was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
