Nigel was born on 10 February 1923 in Crownhill, Plymouth to Captain C. and Angela Adams. He attended Mount House School, Plymouth from 1928-1936 and Pangbourne School from September 1936 though 1940. During his studies at the Nautical College in Pangbourne, Nigel was a Chief Cadet Captain.
Nigel's great interests were the Navy and ships, plus shooting. By all accounts he was an excellent game shot and marksman.
Nigel was commissioned as a RNR Midshipman on 23 July 1940. His first assignment was to the cruiser H.M.S. Birmingham in July 1940. He was subsequently assigned to the destroyer H.M.S. Vanoc in October 1940. In February 1941, he joined his final ship, H.M.S. Hood.
Nigel was serving in Hood as a Temporary Midshipman at the time of the sinking. He was 18 years old at the time of his loss.
