Henry James Wannerton (Harry) was born at Holgate Lodge, Sudbury, Suffolk, England, on 27 July 1903, his parents were Alfred Wannerton and Ellen Tipping. The family home was Brill in Buckinghamshire, but his father was working as a chauffeur of Horse Drawn Carriages, in Sudbury when Harry was born. But Harry was raised in Brill, working as a groom, until joining the RN as Boy Seaman (2nd class), at Chatham in Nov 1918, aged 15, RN No. J93881.
In August 1922 Harry was discharged from the RN due to A Reduction of the Fleet after WW1, but he re-enlists as a Stoker (2nd class) in Jan 1924, in Portsmouth, still aged only 21, RN No, K63327.
He married Ivy Maud Poate on 6 September 1929, at the time he was serving on HMS Curacoa, whilst serving on The Curacoa, Harry picked up his hook (was promoted to Leading Stoker).
Harry joined HMS HOOD in September 1939 & served on Her until She was Lost at Sea, on 24 May 1941 in the Denmark Strait, North Atlantic. Harry was 37 years old when He was lost at sea.
Harry & Ivy, had gone on to have four children, Sheila (1933), Shirley (1935), Stella (1936) & Henry (1940). Ivy was left a Widow at 35 years of age, with 4 young children, my mother Sheila the eldest, aged just 7yrs & the youngest Harry, aged just 1yr.
Harry died a Hero, but his wife Ivy, was also a hero, for without her fighting and succeeding to bring up those 4 young children, where would we be today.
