Ivan served as a Staff Sergeant & Asst. Engineer / Gunner on B-24D #42-40886, 64th Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.
He resided in Los Angeles County, California prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on April 3, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in metal working and also as Divorced, without dependents.
B-24D #42-40886 took off, with a crew of 11, from 7 Mile Drome, Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a night radar mission looking for Japanese shipping in the Bismarck Sea off of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.
They were last contacted by radio and were not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost.
In 1982 this B-24 was found. They had crashed near Mount Eiyawaiy and Engati in Morobe Province during the war.
Ivan was first declared "Missing In Action" on this mission. After his remains were recovered his status was changed to "Killed In Action".
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
