On 06AUG1943, Air Group Six was assigned to USS INDEPENDENCE (CVL-22). On 11AUG1943, "Butch's Boys" flew out to INDEPENDENCE for exercises with the new USS YORKTOWN (CV-10). During the last day, Friday, 13AUG1943, John R. "Johnner) Ogg (BuPers #176896) durring his landingf roll-out put his F6F into the port-side catwalk, hallting all further landings.
On 16FEB1944, Ens. John R. Ogg , was flying wing on Lt. Cdr. John Phillips, who commanded Air Group Six during the attack at the major Japanese fleet base at Truk. Also flying an F6F Hellcat from USS INTREPID, he was overseeing the strikes against shipping trying to leave the base. Neither Phillips or Ogg returned and no radio contact was heard.
