Fireman First Class James Robert Akers served on board the USS Spence (DD-512) Destroyer, and was Killed in Action during the typhoon Cobra in the Philippine Sea, when the ship Sunk, on Dec. 18, 1944, and he is honored with the Purple Heart and (Posthumously) the Philippine Liberation Medal.
