Having gone missing on the above date, Gilbert was not officially declared as being dead by the military until June 19, 1946, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Gilbert served as a Staff Sergeant & Kicker on C-47B #43-48730, 319th Troop Carrier Squadron, 1st Air Commando Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

Gilbert normally was assigned to the 1st Resupply Squadron, 443rd Troop Carrier Group, but was assigned to the above group on this day.

He resided in Franklin County, Massachusetts prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on September 23, 1942 at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Industry Clerk and also as Married.

Gilbert was declared "Missing In Action" in the "Line Of Duty" when his C-47 went missing near Warazup, Burma.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster" and the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.
