In Loving Memory of 1LT Horace LeRoy Borden…

Horace was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross for his exemplary service to his country in the US Air Force. He served with the 311th Fighter Squadron in the 58th Fighter Group. There is a memorial monument remembering him and others MIA at Fort William Mckinley in Manila, Philippines.

He was the son of Horace LeRoy Borden Sr. and Mary Margaret Hayden of 125 Westford Avenue, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts. In 1940, Horace Sr. was an investment salesman and his mother Margaret was a public school teacher. His father was born in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and his mother in Massachusetts. His brother was Lawrence Alfred (Larry) and sister Mary Margaret Gorden. The family can be found in the 1930 and 1940 censuses in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Horace Jr. graduated in 1940 from Classical High School in Springfield, Mass. In his 1939 Blue and White yearbook, he was one of the football minor letter men wearing number 30 jersey in their squadron group photo. He attended two years at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia until his enlistment in 1942. His university yearbook photos are from 1941 and 1942.

The archives at Georgia Tech have a reply letter from Stephen McCormick of Jacksonville, Florida, to the university about the Gold Star Memorial Roll letter written April 8, 1947 about his brother Sheldon Vernon McCormick (a fellow Georgia Tech alum). It references a poem written by Lt. Borden shared with Sheldon's brother. Sheldon was killed in a Pathfinder B-17 crash on November 10, 1943 in Brome, England.
The November, December 1947, Georgia Tech alumni magazine contains the Flier's Reward poem by alumnus Horace Le Roy Borden Jr. and a short biography.

Tragically, Lt. Borden lost his life 13 months later after Sheldon and four years later his brother Lawrence "Larry" Gorden was killed in service in 1948 per father's obituary and another account saying a jeep accident in Germany. His death date or burial is unknown. His father was stationed in Germany in 1948 per Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame Museum biography online and there is a passenger list with his mother and sister sailing for Germany in 1948.

Two very promising young lives cut short by war. Here is one of his poems published in his father's alma mater Dartmouth alumni magazine in May 1948.

Hope Lingers

"When the stars of the night time have fled with the dawning, And sleep with its softness has slipped from our eyes, We gaze at the sunrise that brightens the morning And see that our future shines red in the skies. " 'Tis sad now to watch the deep shadows of wartime That billow, enfolding with blackness our dreams; We lift up our eyes that are seared by the fire of Mars that has ruined our most cherished schemes. "But there in the brilliance we see that it's fading, The glow of the battle, the gleam of the strife. We know that the morrow with peace that is coming is bearing the sweetness of yesterday's life."
