Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until December 14, 1945.

Husband of Dorothy Peterson who resided in Newark, New Jersey.

Donald served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D #42-40653, 394th Bomber Squadron, 5th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Middlesex County, Massachusetts prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 19, 1941 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as employed in a machine shop and also as being Single, without dependents.

He was married sometime after his enlistment.

B-24D #42-40653 took off, with a crew of 9, from Carney Airfield, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on a shipping strike mission over Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea.

They are believed to have been shot down by enemy ship anti-aircraft fire and crashed into the sea near Bougainville Island. The entire crew was lost.

Donald was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
