Joel Whitman Brackett was born December 27, 1832, in the town of Bridgton, Cumberland County, Maine, the son of Chapman Brackett and Amanda Wight Brackett. He moved to Massachusetts, thence to Missouri, in which state he resided in Raymondville until his death, December 30, 1904. He served in Company G, 5th Maine, volunteer infantry, and in company K, United States reserve corps. He married on October 30, 1857, Hannah B. Russell, born May 22, 1838, the daughter of Benjamin and Mahala Wright Russell of Greenwood, Oxford County, Maine.

3. Sarah Louise, b. 13 September 1968 married Chauncey W. Payne, resides in Raymondville, Missouri. Issue:

4. Chauncey Smith, b. August 12, 1898
4. Mary Amy, b. March 29, 1973, married Joseph Holder, March 29, 1896: resides in Raymondville, Missouri.

The 1876 Missouri State Census shows them to be living in Texas County, Township 30, Missouri at which time they had another child, Mary Amy Brackett. Their last child, Charles Joe Brackett was born in 1878.
The 1880 U. S. Census shows them to be living in Jackson, Missouri as well as the 1900 U. S. Census. His grandchildren, William M Brackett and James B. Brackett were living with them at that time. They were sons of Almoren Brackett.
