Fremont was named after his maternal uncle. He was 5 when he lost his father to sudden death and 9 when his mother died. Fremont and his brother went to live with their paternal grandparents after being orphaned. They had to make their own way rather young.

As an American national, Fremont Leon Tabbut was a private in the Australian Infantry when he died. He mustered out of the U.S. Marines in 1911, so he must have envisioned military life as a career once his service with the Marines was over.

Fremont may be the "one" non-Australian/New Zealander mentioned in the history books who died in the Gallipoli Campaign (World War I). So very many men were lost that day which had begun like every other. He was twenty-five.

The Battle of Anzac Cove, Gallipoli Turkey, 25 April 1915, AIF, Roll of Honour-(cut from the list) "...Fremont Leon TABBUT, 7th Infantry Battalion."
