Jack`s memories of his father Edwin.

"He loved to play the harmonica. Every Sunday he would sit out on the front porch with the family and my father would play the harmonica and greet the neighbors as they walked by. He love the harmonica and would sit and play for hours"

Edwin and his wife Anna were born in Norway, two hundred and forty miles north of the Arctic Circle, on the island of Hinnoya. This island is the largest of the Lofoten islands located on the Oksfjorden in the "Land of the Midnight Sun".

Edwin was born August 11, 1874 on the farm of Hundess in Norway. Edwin was the son of Kristian Edvard Johansen & Tina Pauline Vinter Pedersen. Anna Marie his wife was born January 22, 1878 on the farm of Sommarset, in Norway. Anna Marie and Edwin were married on January 18, 1901 in Lodingen, Norway.

Edwin had a brother named Simon and Anna had a sister named Ingrid. Simon and Ingrid were also married.

Edwin and Anna`s first three children, Arthur, Reider, and Osten (Earl) were all born in Norway.

It was Anna`s brother Abel who first came to America. Later, Anna`s brother Paul and Edwin joined him in America where they all found employment working on trolley cars. Working together, these three men established themselves, and started saving money in order to bring their families to America, whom they had left in Norway.

Two years later after they had saved enough money, they sent for their families in Norway and brought them to the United States.

They sailed from Kristiania on May 7, 1909, on board the S. S. Oscar II. Some years later the city of Kristiania`s name was changed to Oslo. The ship was registered out of Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Master was J. V. Hemple also of Copenhagen. The ship`s surgeon was L. Hansen, who had graduated from the Royal Medical College of Copenhagen.

Edwin Anna moved in to a home in Salt Lake City on Hollywood Ave.

Edwin and Anna Marie had six more children in America nine children in all! Anna and Edwin raised their children to speak both Norwegian and English, however, they told their children that they are in America now and whenever they left the house, they were to speak only English.

Edwinopened his own shoe repair company called, the O.K. Shoe Shop Repairing. Edwin and Anna also made extra money from their turkey ranch that was located in Murray Utah.

In the year 1950, Edwin was robbed in his shoe repair shop. The man who robbed him hit him over the head and took the money from the cash drawer. Edwin never recovered. He died September 27, 1950, from a blood clot in his brain.

Edwin was a hard worker and a honest man and he loved his family very much.
