She is listed as Mary Johnson, along with four of her McDonald half-siblings, in a March 1842 school record of Hitchcock Free School District (No.9) for the County of Richmond.
About 1847, Mary became the wife of William Pickett Gibson. They lived in the Beaver Dam district of Richmond County and were the parents of ten children.
There is a story that in 1865, while Mary was in labor with son Samuel, Sherman's troops came into the front yard and threatened to burn down the house. They didn't fortunately.
