Born Dec. 2, 1918, in Pekin to George and Alice Baldwin Saal, he married Jane Dorothy Allen on Aug. 31, 1946, in St. Louis. She died March 29, 1996. Four brothers and three sisters also preceded him in death.
Surviving are four sons, George A., Steven A. and Robert L., all of Pekin, and Thomas J. of Plantation, Fla.; one daughter, Mrs.
John (Mary Jane) Sours of Pekin; one sister, Alyce Gilmore of Pekin; and 11 grandchildren.
He served on the Tazewell County Board from 1948 to 1950. He was a state representative from 1954 to 1958, from 1962 to 1964 and from 1966 to 1968. A former president of the Illinois Sheriffs Association, he was Tazewell County sheriff from 1950 to 1954 and from 1958 to 1962. He also worked for the state comptroller's office, retiring in 1982. He was a delegate to numerous Democratic Party conventions.
A World War II Marine Corps veteran who served in the South Pacific, he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Pekin Veterans of Foreign Wars and William Schaefer American Legion Post 44. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pekin and Knights of Columbus, Archbishop Schlarman Council 3507. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at his church. The Rev. Gerald Verdun will officiate. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Abts Mortuary, with a Christian wake service at 5 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by his VFW post.
