CHESAPEAKE - The Rev. Chester L. Phelps Sr. recently of New York, and formerly of Chesapeake, died Oct. 20, 2007, in New York. He was born May 24, 1915, in Norfolk. For 20 years he was a manager with Lakeside Dairy Farms. He was a teacher and deacon in Raleigh Heights Baptist Church. In 1960, he graduated from SW Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. He served as pastor of Mathews Baptist Church from 1960-67. He served and retired as pastor emeritus of Immanuel Baptist Church in 1978.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Louise Consolvo Phelps. He is survived by four children, Louise Youngs and husband Clyde of New York, the Rev. Chester L. Phelps Jr. and wife Margaret and William H. Phelps all of Richmond, and Beverly Phelps Fraser and husband James of Lake Ridge, Va.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther P. Davis of Norfolk and Margaret D. Morton of Virginia Beach; three sisters-in-law, Marietta C. Trawczynski, Mary C. Jackson and Julia Consolvo, all of Chesapeake.
A service celebrating the lives of the Rev. and Mrs. Chester Phelps Sr. will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Raleigh Heights Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to The Boys' Home, 306 Boys Home Road, Covington, VA 24426-5599.
