Otto D. Sauer, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, long time Howards Grove resident and currently of Townsend, WI, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010 at the home of his daughter after a brief illness.
He was born in Newton, WI on October 10, 1930, a son of the late Frederich and Marie (Wiegand) Sauermilch.
Otto graduated from Lincoln High School in Manitowoc in 1948. He then attended DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago.
Otto was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951, serving his country during the Korean Conflict.
After his honorable discharge, he married the former Janet E. Purgett on September 19, 1953 in Milwaukee, where they lived until 1963.
During that time, Otto was employed in the TV and Radio repair service. In 1963, Otto and Janet purchased a farm in the town of Mosel where he farmed over four years. He purchased the Haven City Club in 1967, operating the tavern for one year. Otto was later an oil distributor for Grasse Oil Company from 1969 until 1979, when he began his carpentry service (he never retired).
Otto treasured his family, his beloved kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. Teaching them the correct way to fish, play cards, or just about anything, Otto was the expert. It was never in his vocabulary to say no; Otto was always there to help a neighbor, friend or family member. It was amazing how he could fix just about anything. He loved his time up North and all his family and friends in Florida. A big polka fan, Otto and Janet enjoyed the music and dancing for many years.
Surviving Otto is his loving wife, Janet; a son, O. Ross Sauer in Sheboygan; four daughters, Rhonda Rae (Gary) Adler of Howards Grove, Renee Lee (Bob Gavin) Lawrenz of Sheboygan, Regina Melissa (Steve) Steinhardt of Sheboygan and Ramona Kris Priem of Sheboygan Falls; seven grandchildren, Eric (Rachel) Konz, Matt (Shannon) Konz, Phillip Priem, Andrea Marie (Roberto) Frias, Courtney M. and Michaela L. Steinhardt, Samantha S. Priem; seven great-grandchildren, Madison, Myah and Austin Konz, Amalia, Azelea, Astreya and Angelita Frias; one brother, Edward (Betty) Sauer of Germantown; and two sisters, Marie Lucas of Greenfield and Evelyn Burbey of West Bend.
In addition to his parents, Otto was also preceded in death by three brothers, Fritz, and John Sauermilch and Henry Sauer; and three sisters, Leah East, Emily Manlick and Emma Waier.
A Funeral Service will be conducted for Otto on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Zimmer's Westview Funeral and Cremation Care Center (Hwy 42 and County JJ, Howards Grove). Reverends Dennis and Wendy Mannering will officiate. Interment will be in Immanuel Cemetery, Town of Herman, on Monday, August 9, 2010.
