Father was one of the founding members of Selma, and also a Judge, Reuben Saffold.

Benjamin Franklin Saffold graduated from the University of Alabama in 1845 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Became a Lawyer in 1847. Graduated from the University of Alabama with Master's Degree in 1849. Fought in the Civil War, enlisting as a Private. Served in the 4th Alabama Volunteers, Company K, until the end of the war. Became Circuit Judge in 1865. After the Civil War, he changed political affiliation from Democrat Party to Republican Party, and founded the Alabama Republican Party. Elected Mayor of Selma in 1867. He was a Judge on the Alabama Supreme Court in 1868. Also a member of Alabama Constitutional Conventions of 1868 and 1874. And was an Alabama State Senator from 1875 to 1877.
