Martha was born to James and Sarah Ann Means Watson and was one of 10 children. The family farmed in Southwestern Minnesota on 400 acres which included cows, horses, swine, sheep, and cattle. They raised wheat, corn and oats. Sounds like plenty of work for 12 family members.

On April 14, 1897, Martha married James J. Lowe, a young man who had ridden an Orphan Train from New York where he was born, to Spring Valley, MN where he was adopted by the Lowe family. James's birth name was John J. Mader, and he came west with his brothers when he was about 3 or 4 years old.

Martha and James had two children in Minnesota, Lloyd and Cecil. Then, between 1902 and 1905 they made the trek out to Sunny California, settling in Modesto. They added one child, Charles, in California. James worked in the laundry trade his entire life, and Martha worked in grocery and household goods stores.

One of James's four brothers, Jake Mader Olds, moved from Minnesota out to live near James in Modesto.

James passed away in 1947,and Martha lived until 1962.
