Ralph Gilbert Hanson was born 2 May 1917, Freehold, Monmouth, New Jersey, the son of Samuel Hanson and Gertrude Mary Christiansen Hanson. Unfortunately, Gertrude Mary died in the 1918 flu epidemic at the family home at 85 Broad Street in Freehold. She predeceased her husband and three children; Gertrude Mabel, age 9, Samuel William, age 2 and Ralph Gilbert, age 1. Ralph's father married Ida B. Clayton 1 June 1920 at the home of her parents in Freehold. Ida took on the responsibility of raising a big family, and Ralph often commented what a good mother she was. In 1942, Ralph married Dorothy Touton and they had six children; 3 sons and 3 daughters. He was a lifelong member of the Reformed Dutch Church of Freehold and was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. Ralph loved to ride his Harley motorcycle and went on occasional trips with his brothers, Samuel and Paul, who also rode motorcycles. Dorothy predeceased her husband in 1980 and Ralph missed her dearly. Sister, Gertrude Fell, and brothers, John, Samuel, Myron and Paul predeceased Ralph who died 9 August 2010 at the home of his daughter Lorraine Yoncak of Freehold. Ralph and Dorothy are interred together at Maplewood Cemetery.
