JUDGE TUCKER DIES AT SEALE
------------------
Gallant Confederate Soldier and Good Citizen; Father of W. H. Tucker of Enquirer-Sun.
------------------
Seale, Ala., June 17 -- (Special)--
Judge W. A. Tucker died at his home in this city this morning at 6:10 o'clock after an illness of several weeks of a complication of troubles. He had been in failing health for two years or more, and for the past several months had been quite feeble. Notwithstanding his feebleness, he continued to look after his affairs until two weeks ago today, when he was forced to take his bed. He was given every attention by relatives and friends, but he could not recover, and at the hour state he quietly and peacefully passed away as one lying down to pleasant dreams.
William A. L. Tucker was a son of the late Joseph T. and Jane Tucker. He was born about three miles north of Seale, on the Crawford road on March 12, 1854 and had resided in this county all his life. He was educated in the common schools of his time, and engaged in the pursuit of farming until the war between the states came on. Then, in common with other patriotic youths of the south, he shouldered his musket and went to the front. He was a member of Company I [i], 64th Georgia regiment. His first captain was Nick Girard, of Columbus, and later Fannin Burch, who was killed at the "blow-up" at Petersburg, Va. Judge Tucker was sergeant of his company, and all of his superior officers were killed. At Petersburg he was one of five members of his company who succeeded in reaching the enemy's works without being wounded. Only one member of his company survives him, Mr. Simpson, president of the Lumpkin (Ga.) bank.
After the war he returned home engaging in different kinds of work. On September 19, 1867, he was married to Miss E. Priscilla Porter, who with one son, W. H. Tucker of Columbus, survives him. Many years ago he made a profession of faith in Christ as his savior, and was received into the fellowship of the Baptist church.
He moved from his home near Seale into town in 1880, and resided here up to the time of his death. He was appointed to the office of notary public ex-officio justice of the peace about thirty years ago, and had held the office without interruption up to the time of his death.
Judge Tucker was the oldest of the eight children of his parents three of who survive him: Judge J. H. Tucker, of Atlanta; Mr. N. Tucker and Mrs. L. M. Lacey, of Birmingham. The deceased was well known throughout the county and had a large number of friends who will learn of his death with much regret.
The funeral and interment will take place tomorrow (Sunday) morning at the Porter burying ground, four miles north of Seale, at 8 o'clock.
