John Baxter Hensley was born in Yancy Co., NC. He was the son of John Pierce Hensley and Margaret McMahan Hensley. The family moved to Ark. in 1868 or 1869. His siblings were: Silas E., Jane Amanda, Goodson M., Martha A.,Mary E., William A., and James P.

John Baxter Hensley "Baxter", and Mary Elizabeth Tate "Mollie", daughter of Mitchell and Mary Elizabeth Tate, were married on Oct. 16, 1877 in Benton Co., Ark. Baxter and Molly lived in a big two story house across the road from the Temperance Hill Baptist Church and Cemetery. Their children were: James B. "Jim" Hensley, Ella Hensley Rash, , John M. Hensley, Grace Emaline Hensley Morris, Melvia Willie Hensley Chenoweth, Iva Lee Hensley, Minnie Lee Hensley, and Mike B. Hensley.

Baxter and his son, Mike, ran a store in Healing Springs, Ark. Baxter also worked at the saw mill in Osage Mills, Ark.

Baxter was a member of the Temperance Hill Baptist Church and was their song leader.
