Glenn Hilyard, 53, Douglass mortician, died suddenly at his home about 6 p.m. Monday from a heart attack. He was in the yard pruning some shrubs when the seizure came. He was rushed to Newton hospital by his wife: son, Brent: Marshal Jim Peak and Jim Taylor, but all that could be done was to no avail. He had suffered an attack some weeks ago, but apparently was getting along well,
Joseph Glenn Hilyard was born December 9, 1910, at Severy, Kansas, the son of Frank and Elsie Hilyard. He grew up there and attended Kansas State U., then the Williams Institution of Embalming. He received his embalmer's license in October of 1932 and was located at Newton and Lindsborg.
He was married to Olena Ludvickson March 32, 1934. They came to Douglass in 1936 and established the Hilyard Funeral Home, which they have conducted for 28 years. In that time they have made friends far and wide.
Glenn has had about all the honors a community can bestow on a man. He has been president of the C. of C.; member of the city council; acting mayor; 12 years on the school board; trustee of the Copeland Memorial Library; past president of the Kansas State Funeral Directors' Assn; past president of the Kansas State Embalmers; member of Douglass Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Wichita Consistory, Midan Shrine, and the Methodist. Church.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Olena; two children, Brent, who is a graduate embalmer and assoiated with the Hilyard Funeral Home; and Cheryl Sue, a student at Arkansas City Junior College; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hilyard of Severy.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Thrusday at the Douglass Methodist church, conducted by Rev.Paul Hansen, with burial in Douglass cemetery.
For 28 years, Glenn Hilyard and his wife Olena, have served the people of Douglass, Rock, Rose Hill, and the community around, have comforted hundreds in their times of sorrow.
