Melinda was born the daughter of William Susott and Wilhelmina Gerichs Susott at their home in Elberfeld, Indiana. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church of Elberfeld. In 1909, the family moved to a farm near Lafe, Arkansas, and in 1921 to a farm at Shepherd, Montana. Melinda graduated from high school in Billings, Montana, and received a teacher's certificate from Normal College, in Dillon, Montana. She taught first grade and swimming at the Twin Bridges Orphanage, and later taught at Cracker Box School and Caryle School in Wibaux County, Montana. On 23 October 1930, she married William Quale at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sheperd, Montana, whom she had met while teaching at the Cracker Box Elementary School. The couple grew wheat and raised cattle on their farm 25 miles south of Wibaux (10 miles west of Carlyle) for the next 32 years. Melinda was a member of Carlyle Lutheran Church until 1961, when they moved to Wibaux. She was a 4-H Leader, Sunday School teacher, member of the Ladies Aid and the Trinity Lutheran Church Women. She spent many hours sewing quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Her husband, William, passed away in November 1976. In 1998, she was moved to Tooele, Utah, to be near her daughter, Mrs. Annette (Ron) Palo. She was preceded in death by twin daughters, Florence and Flora, who died soon after their birth in October 1931, her sister, three brothers, and her parents. She is survived by 2 daughters, a son, 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren.
