Served during the Revolutionary War as a Lieutenant in the North Carolina Militia on the North Carolina Line.
Appointed by Governor Sevier as one of the first Magistrates of Grainger County, TN, in June 1796. At the first meeting of the magistrates, James was selected as the first county coroner, a position he held until 1798 when he was selected to be the Chairman of the County Court.
Migrated to Preble (originally Butler) County, OH, by early 1800's. Identified as one of the founders of Camden. He was a real estate promoter and owned the tavern/general store on the south end of town.
In his estate inventory, James owned three (of four) volumes of Flavius Josephus' writings, and two law books (which in 1826 probably equated to a complete law library).
