Vera Mary Hiett, daughter of Harvey Laben Hiett and Elsie Irene Astle, was born on a farm just on the outskirts of Haven, Kansas.

While she was still a young child, Vera's family moved into the town of Haven, where she lived almost all of her life. She spent a few summers in Western Kansas, near Bucklin while her parents farmed in that area, where she met her future husband, Gordon Snyder, in about 1929.

Vera graduated from what is now Wichita State University in 1930 and was fortunate during the depression to get a job teaching in a one-room school in Sumner County, Kansas. She continued teaching in various small schools until 1943, when she moved to California to be with Gordon. They were married there that year on 12 Sep 1943 in Berkeley, Alameda County, California.

When World War II ended, Gordon and Vera returned to Kansas in May of 1945 to make Haven, Kansas their home. They had a farm and a beautiful large farmhouse, both of which were lost to a fire. Gordon then went to work for the Haven Board of Education and Vera taught school for the Haven Grade School. In 1952, they built a nice little home in Haven, built largely with their own hands. They lived there until their deaths.

Vera was a member of the Haven United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Gordon. Surviving were her children, one son and one daughter.
