Edward L. Barth (84)

The chapter on his "Long Life Short Story", as he liked to call it, has come to an end. He took his last breath peacefully at home surrounded by family July 15, 2010. "Bud" as everyone called him, was born February 4, 1926 to Louis and Louise Barth in Puyallup, WA where they lived on a family farm. Graduating from Puyallup High School 1944 he then enlisted with the U.S. Army during WWII, 1944-1947. This is where he learned most of his valuable trademark skills as a precision equipment operator, dedicated firefighter and most of all his amazing talent to fix just about anything with the "good stuff", most would call it broken junk, he had saved off jobs. Happy to be home from Guam, he decided it was time to start a family. Bud married his sweetheart Doris Jean Casto August 1947. They purchased the home they would live in forever March 1948 in Edgewood, WA. Four children followed shortly after, thus creating a long list of new family and community activities. Always busy providing, he still managed to make time for activities such as bowling, baseball, Boy Scouts, raising beef, charter member of the Edgewood Volunteer Fire Department (42 yrs. retired), Fire Commissioner of Dist. 8, Edgewood water board, babysitting grandchildren and one of his favorites later in life a cold beer and a good game of poker! Besides his job at Moreland Motors 1947-1955, one of his favorite jobs to talk about was being an equipment operator with the McChord Air Force Base fire department 1955-1958. They were the ones to call if there was an aircraft crash or rescue needed. He then opened and ran successfully with his wife Doris Jean, Barth Dozer Services 1958 and The Valley Lunch & Diner 1967. This was the same time period he was very involved with the bowling league and often sponsored the shirts for the team. The Dozer service established such a good reputation for digging swimming pools it lead into their next business adventure. Barth's Valley Pool Supply, Inc. 1980. He purchased and remodeled The Little Red Barn, a dairy store, to accommodate all the supplies, equipment, and retail space he needed. This is where Bud and his wife Doris Jean would spend the rest of their working years along side children and grandchildren. Barth's Valley Pool Supply, Inc. is still in the family and continues operation today same as it always has. Bud was resourceful, kindhearted, loving, witty, dedicated, and sometimes a little stubborn. He was adamant about doing things the "right way." Anyone who met him always remembered who he was. Usually for either some kind, generous act, he had a soft spot for people in need or a lesson he taught them, even though a little yelling may have been involved. In the end yelling or not people ended up liking him, he was just that kind of guy. Bud is preceded in death by his parents Louis and Louise Barth, his sister Eunice Gilliam, and his wife Doris Jean Barth. He is survived by three siblings: Maxine Palmer, Raymond (Linda) Barth, Charles (Barbara) Barth; four children: Edward (Nancy) Barth Jr., Cheryl (James) Sholseth, James (Leita) Barth, Kathy (Carl) Barth; seven grandchildren: Jennifer (Kerry) Bennett, Riley Barth, David Sholseth, Charlene (Todd) Fazio, Michelle (Andy) Woolf, Jilliaun Meeker, Lucas Perkins and six great grandchildren: Robert, Bobby, Dylan, Haley, Ariel and Isabella. He was deeply loved, a one-of-a-kind original, and will be greatly missed. The Barth family would like to say thank you to everyone who helped out in this difficult time and would especially extend gratitude toward the people at Hospice. They made the unspeakable bearable. Donations may be made to Franciscan Hospice. Viewing will be Thursday, July 22, 2010 from 1:00-6:00pm at Hills Funeral Home, 217 E. Pioneer Ave., Puyallup, WA., 253-845-1172. Funeral will be Friday, July 23, 2010, 11:00am at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 720 West Main, Puyallup, WA. Graveside following at 2:00pm, Woodbine Cemetery in Puyallup.
