Juanita Fern Petrie, seventy-six year old retired Board Certified Wesley Medical Center Oncology Care Registered Nurse and mother of six children succombed to pancreatic cancer on Friday, October 29,2004.
Visitation 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Hilyard Funeral Home. Service 2 p.m. Monday, First Christian Church. The sixth of seven children, Juanita Petrie was born in Clovis, New Mexico on September 28, 1928. Juanita graduated from Clovis High School in 1946. After a brief period of study at Scott White Nursing School in Temple, Texas, she transferred to Wichita Hospital, Sisters of St. Joseph Nursing School and received her registered nursing degree with a specialty in Obstetrics in 1949.
Following graduation she married Charles V. Petrie, a Wichita State University Aeronautical Engineering Masters Candidate she dated while attending nursing school. Once married, and settled in their home in Wichita, they started their family in 1951. After the birth of their sixth child in 1966, they purchased a farm near Douglass, Kansas. There, while running the farm and caring for her children, she managed to support them by participating in their extracurricular activities including scouting and 4H. As The nest began to empty, Junanita resumed her nursing career in 1978 by working at the Wesley Medical Center as an Oncology RN where she retired in 1993. From retirement until her death, she continued to enrich the lives of those around her, As she had done with her own children, she then immersed herself in the lives of her youngest grandchildren and her great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by ger father, Frank Webb Damon and her mother, Eunice Cox Damon, both of Clovis, new Mexico. Her suvivors include her husband, Charles Victor Petrie; her brother, Edward (Damon) of Albuquerque, NM; her sister, June and Bill (Bolak) of Alamogordo, NM; her six children and their spouses; David of Norman, Ok, Jonathan of Augusta, Ks., Charles and Lu of Manassas, Va, Lance and Irma(Flores) of College Park, MD, Sarah and John(Foster), of Douglass,Serena and Jeff (Polk) of Wichita,Ks.; her seven grandchildren, Melanie and Geoff (Stalker) of Wichita, Ks. Ryan (Foster) of Winfield, Ks., Tabatha and Devin (Polk), both of Wichita, Ks., Jason, Charles, Robert and Christopher (Petrie) of Manassas, Va.; and a great-grandchild, Lindsey (Stalker) of Wichita, Ks.
